Learning to pray as Jesus taught us

When Jesus’ disciples asked Him how to pray, He didn’t give them a long lecture or a complicated method.

He gave them a 20 second, 66 word prayer.

What we call the Lord’s Prayer is not only a simple prayer to recite. It is a prayer meant to shape us. Somehow we might assume we should move beyond simple-short prayers as we mature in our faith. B

ut the truth is the opposite: - we grow deeper into the simple prayers. And as we do, they form in ways we desperately need:

Some very practical ways to make the Lord’s Prayer part of daily life.

  1. Slow the prayer down. Instead of rushing through it, pause after each phrase and turn it into your own words.

  2. Pray it with your family/friends at meals and regular connection times. Unbelievers and young children can learn to pray this prayer. It can be prayed together at the table, on the phone or before bed.

  3. Use it to start your morning. Pray it before looking at your phone, your to-do list or the news. Let this prayer set the direction of your day, not the algorithm.

  4. Place your Lord's Prayer Guide somewhere prominant. If you see it as a part of your everyday routine (phone home screen, bathroom mirror, bedside, etc.), it will be easier to make it a part of every day.

If Jesus thought this prayer was worth daily attention, it is certainly worth learning it - and learning it deeply.
